You Ask for Equal Rights

Dear African Americans,

You have suffered through the years. Your forefathers might have been my ancestor's slaves at some point in time. Your forefathers fought for the same thing my forefathers fought for prior; equality, liberation, freedom. The United States throws around these words often. "Land of the free" and "a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal" are phrases that might ring a bell, coming from our own National Anthem and the famous Gettysburg Address. But as we say these words are we standing by them?

Affirmative action. Something that the African American population strives to keep. How is it that you ask for equality and then ask again for special treatment? I do not understand this. When I went through the college process this year I was saddened to learn about this. Not because I was a caucasian looking for extra opportunities to steal away from the African American population....or because I am "racist", but because your forefathers fought hard for equality and you are asking for something different.

Why is that millions die a day. Thousands upon thousands murdered unjustly. And so many remain nameless and yet the news is still grieving Travyon Martin. Yes, I am deeply saddened to hear any younging or anyone for that matter is dead. But thousands upon thousands upon thousands have died since. Why don't I see their name in the news? Why isn't Obama talking about how "that could have been him" in a white mans shoes. Because the reality is what happened to Travyon and what happened to millions could be any of us...regardless of our genders, our skin colors, and our social status. Anyone of us could be murdered.

Another thing that I find horrible is the word nigger. I don't care if you are black, white, asian, or an alien that word is inhumane. That word can get me in a lot of trouble. Why is that you can call yourselves that. Or more importantly why would you want to? You are so much better than some derogatory slang word. So act like and kill that word. You are the main offenders of it.

So I put the ball in your hands. I stated fact after fact and opinion after opinion. I respect the African American community and am disgusted at their treatment in the past. But does that deserve them some special treatment now? Your forefathers would be ashamed.

Go ahead and attack me on this. Tell me how stupid I am, how racist you think I am, and how close-minded I may sound. I will respect your opinion regardless if you respect my own.

Sincerlely,

Jessica Shapiro (a girl who thinks you deserve a lot better than you are giving yourselves)
